This May is going to be a WONDER-FULL month as we find ways to celebrate our moms and those who are not directly our moms, but also mother us.
I have had the pleasure of being mentored and mothered by numerous beautiful people over the years, and I can honestly say they have been a blessing. I only hope my attempts at mothering or mentoring are as lovely as those I have received.
May is a time for us to reflect on those who have had a profound influence on our lives, and to delve deeper into the essence of their role.
Some cultures refer to the Infinite as the Divine Mother, and yes, after raising my kids, I believe that. For without the Grace of God, the many times I turned them over to their Infinite Mother’s wisdom and protection was the best thing I could have done. We mere mortal moms are not so all-knowing. Everything turns out in the end, despite a few twists and turns. Motherhood is a function of LOVING AND TRUSTING. And for times when there is loss, we can take comfort that the arms of the Divine have taken over.
Traditions give us time to be grateful and heal.
In the Algonquin tradition, women play a central role in the governance and guidance of the community, in addition to their traditional roles of maintaining family unity. Their community influence encompasses consensus-building, gift-giving, and peacebuilding through negotiation.
"Beneath the clouds lives the Earth-Mother from whom is derived the Water of Life, who at Her Bosom feeds all plants, animals, and humans." Anishinaabe Legend.
It is fitting that they call themselves the “Anishinaabe, or translated, “those who are dancing. I love that, let’s all be dancers this Mother’s Day and sashay right into bliss.
This Mother’s Day, May 11, 2025, holds great spiritual significance, according to Dr. Donn Jay Wiedershine, Spiritual Intuitive, Teacher, and Healer. He says many of us will feel a Celestial pull that day, and those who have been abused or hurt in the past will find lasting peace. Now that is worth dancing about.
Sky Woman is a central figure in the Iroquois story of creation. She represents the connection between the spiritual and physical realms. She is said to have played a significant role in the formation of Earth. Sky Woman's periodic journey from the Heavens to Earth throughout history involves bringing life to Earth through children. She fosters the idea that a balance between the duality of living practically on earth and bringing the harmony of Heaven to our lives through inner spiritual and prayerful practices is the essence of achieving harmony.
Iroquois society is matrilineal, meaning descent is traced through the mother's line rather than the father's. Iroquois chiefs are men, yet it is the women who choose and nominate them for leadership positions. It is the role of women to ensure that the leaders fulfill their responsibilities to care for the people. The Earth Mother is also known as Nokomis, and referred to as the Grand-Mother.
About a friend’s Mother, by John Greenleaf Whittier from 1874.
And if her life small leisure found
For feasting ear and eye,
And Pleasure, on her daily round,
She passed unpausing by,
Yet with her went a secret sense
Of all things sweet and fair,
And Beauty’s gracious providence
Refreshed her unaware.
She kept her line of rectitude
With love’s unconscious ease;
Her kindly instincts understood
All gentle courtesies.
Even John Greenleaf Whittier appreciated the mentoring kindness
a friend’s mother gave him.
Perhaps you're wishing you had the perfect gift to give this Mother’s Day?
Your mom will cherish every word
And smile upon you
Every time, you’re on her doorstep
Or not… no matter the time of day.
Come what may…
’Tis your presence she wishes to entertain
A little fun, a little laughter,
Some memories shared
Some hugs exchanged, again and again.
Happy Day to You!
